How The Chevy Cruze Gets Such Great Mileage

August 31, 2010

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is a game-changer. With up to 40 mpg highway, and well-equipped with great standard features for the money, this efficient and attractive little compact is poised to win a lot of hearts (and save those drivers a lot of green at the pump).

How does fuel efficiency come about? Why haven’t cars always been so fuel efficient if we were capable of 40 mpg all along? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. People want cars with enough acceleration to feel confident and in control on the road (which means a more powerful engine), and to be safe and protected in the event of an accident (which can mean a heavy frame and thick body). These were the sorts of criteria driving the evolution of the automobile.

But fuel economy, both for ecological and economic reasons, is high in the consciousness of many drivers today—and that’s definitely a good thing. It’s challenged automakers the world over to make cars that work smarter, not harder, to deliver what buyers want without guzzling gas to do so.

Chevy Cruze shutter grille: re-thinking the details for better fuel economy

Enter the Chevy Cruze, whose Eco trim, as mentioned previously, is expected to get a full 40 miles to the gallon. Not bad, right? The diagram you see above lays out the care and thought that went into just the grille of the new Eco Cruze. It adjusts dynamically to block as much air as possible (for better aerodynamics) and let in as much as is needed to keep the engine at the right temperature.

The willingness to look at the details and rethink the standards will ultimately create better, improved standards, and that’s exactly what Chevrolet is doing with the Cruze.
