It’s Our 72nd Birthday!

July 7, 2010

Today, we’re celebrating the dealership’s original founding, 72 years ago, back in 1938. With businesses, people generally celebrate anniversaries. But this dealership has been a part of our family for 72 years – it is our family – so we think that “Happy Birthday” is entirely appropriate! For those of you who aren’t familiar, here’s a condensed biography of how we got to where we are.

72 years ago, Charles “Woody” Dutton (Dan & Andy Jr.’s grandfather) and Edgar L. McCoubrey broke ground on a Cadillac dealership at the La Plaza shopping center in Palm Springs, and called it Plaza Motors. In 1954, the dealership had already expanded significantly, and moved to a long-time location on North Indian Canyon Drive.

That’s where the Jessup name comes into things – Andrew Jessup (now Sr.) married Charles Dutton’s daughter, Diane, and became a part of the family business. After several decades of success there, we opened our new and current Cathedral City facility in 2001, rechristened Jessup Auto Plaza to blend the old Plaza Motors with the present-day Jessup family leadership.

So this is the third generation of the family to be selling cars as part of this company. The family, and the dealership, (and really the whole greater Palm Springs area), all grew up together. You could say that things around here are pretty healthy for 72 years old. Thanks for being a part of our journey!

Jessup Auto Plaza is a Cathedral City GM dealership, selling and servicing Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Saab, Hummer, and Pontiac vehicles for Cathedral City, La Quinta, Indio, Hemet, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Banning, Beaumont, Yucaipa, and surrounding cities. We’d love to answer any questions you may have. Please call us at 800-900-KARS, email us at jessupautoplaza@gmail.com, or view our entire Jessup Auto Plaza inventory.
