GM Trucks In Line For New Fuel-Efficient Tweaks

May 24, 2010

In addition to the obvious aspects that impact fuel economy—engine power, aerodynamics, transmission—there are a lot of small details that, taken together, add up. Recently, it’d been announced that future models of GM trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will be equipped with exactly that type of small detail.

It’s called “active grille louvers.” Air comes in through the grille to help cool the engine, which is necessary, but that air drag is one of the leading deterrents to better aerodynamics (and thus better fuel economy). The new system, now in the design stage for GM trucks, lets in only enough air to cool the engine, as determined by a thermostat, and closes the rest out. This allows the truck to be as aerodynamic as possible, while still keeping the engine sufficiently cooled.
