Even With Higher Criteria, 2010 Chevy Malibu Earns “Top Safety Pick”

November 30, 2009

The 2010 Chevrolet Malibu was recently named a “Top Safety Pick” for 2010 by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. This in itself is not surprising; the Malibu has proven time and time again to be an incredibly safe vehicle.

The surprising part is how many competing vehicles did not earn the honor compared to previous years. This year, the IIHS named 27 vehicles to the prestigious Top Safety Pick list; last year, there were 94. That’s a decrease of 71% in the number of vehicles that measured up to the IIHS’s highest standards.

The difference? Increased criteria for roof strength in rollover accidents, in addition to the front, side, and rear crash performance already required. In addition to the rollover-resistant frame, the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu features standard antilock brakes, side curtain and side-impact airbags, stability control, brake assist, and OnStar.
